Circle of Light is transforming lives in rural Africa by distributing modern cooking and lighting systems through community energy stores. Families pay a small initial fee to purchase systems and to become part of the CoL program. Ownership is an important aspect among members as there is an inherent personal and financial investment that motivates them to care for their equipment.

THE COOKING SYSTEM Using LPG (propane) for fuel, modern stoves provide families with the ability to cook quickly and safely with a clean-burning, reliable and affordable source of energy. Children are no longer in danger of falling into an open fire, and asthma and respiratory problems are relieved with the elimination of smoke in the home. The CoL cooking system includes a cook-stove, LPG cylinder, and LPG regulator. Empty LPG cylinders are exchanged for full ones at the local CoL Energy Store.

THE LIGHTING SYSTEM Low-voltage (12VDC) lighting systems create a brighter and safer environment in the home, and also make it possible for more activities in the evenings, like schoolwork, family time, and longer business hours for increased income. The CoL lighting system includes a battery, light fixture and compact fluorescent lamp. Discharged batteries are recharged at the local CoL Energy Store.

THE CoL CENTER Once 250 families have joined the Circle of Light (CoL) program, Circle of Light will either launch a CoL Center in a new community, which has met and agreed upon CoL's program requirements, or add more homes to an existing CoL community. The CoL Center includes an Energy Store and a Christian Training Center.
