Circle of Light - Energy to lift the world's poor out of darkness

Yasulwe
Number of CoL homes: 549
About 17,000 people live in the flat land of Yasluwe, where there is one man to every three women. In the warm and humid climate, farmers grow corn, millet, sorghum, cassava, sweet potatoes, sugar cane and coffee. It is a relatively safe community in which to live. Circle of Light (CoL) was launched in September of 2005, and membership continues to grow at positive rate.

The community is predominantly populated by the Luhya tribe, which is known for its male circumcision ceremony carried out every other year. A special rite of passage, this marks a period of transition from boyhood to manhood. During the circumcision, done with no anaesthesia, a boy may not scream, make any unnecessary movements or even blink. This proves that he is worthy of respect from the women and community. This is one reason the Lyhuya people consider their tribe to be very strong.

Every Wednesday, Rotary Doctors partner with area medical professionals to hold a medical clinic in the Yasulwe Christian Training Center building. Nearly 500 people come each week. Services, offered at an affordable price, include immunizations (especially for children) and blood tests. A refrigerator, which is provided by CoL keeps vaccines and medications cool. The refrigerator is powered by a CoL propane cylinder that is refilled at the local Energy Store as needed.

Community prayer requests:

  • Pray for completion of a community water project, which CoL members have initiated. A hole has been dug and funds are being raised to purchase the required operational equipment.
  • Pray for more pastors, evangelists and leaders in the community.
  • With better educational facilities and resources, the area could attract more qualified teachers and improve the community's educational standards.
