Waitaluk (population 18,000) is located about 200 miles from Nairobi in a fertile valley just below the Cherangani Hills. The area has many rivers flowing through it, and the Nzoia River is pipelined to nearby reservoirs. Although revenue from this natural resource is collected by the government, Waitaluk has benefited from some government-funded projects, including relatively good roads, a medical clinic and three boarding high schools. About 40 percent of the people and the majority of economic enterprise focuses on agriculture, raising corn, beans and cattle for meat and milk. Some are employed by small businesses in Kitale, which is about 8 miles away.

Christianity and Islam are the two main religions in the area, and both use crusades, seminars, youth camps and door-to-door evangelism to gain new converts. Although many attend Christian services, most have not received Christ as their personal savior.

The CoL Center was launched in Waitaluk in March of 2004. The people of Waitaluk (especially those who are CoL members) recognize the value of improving the community and have initiated several projects like a tree farm to address deforestation and new medical facility. CoL members are raising funds and leading the way on the new facility, which will provide more services than the current government-run clinic, which is out-patient only.

Community Prayer Requests

While many people attend Christian churches on Sundays, most have not received salvation.
Traditional alcohol is still brewed, further perpetuating alcoholism in the area.
Pray for completion of the new medical clinic, which was initiated by the CoL cooperative.
Many Muslims in the area are CoL members. Pray that they will receive and accept the message of God’s hope and love.
Healing Waters International piloted a purified water project last year. Its success will determine whether or not the project expands to other CoL communities.
