 Number of CoL homes: 1,197
Murereshwa, Kenya, is a flat, thorn-ridden land with a spread-out population of about 35,000. Circle of Light was launched in Murereshwa in 2005 and its residents say they have found a new hope and confidence since the program's arrival. (See related article.) Many describe that the community has a more “family feel” and that they are working together, replanting trees in the deforested area and are starting projects that empower women and children, combat poverty and increase income.
Murereshwa CoL association members started the Mushroom Project—an income-generating program that is reducing poverty and improving nutrition. More than 30 people are involved in the project at various phases of planting, maintaining and harvesting, and each is paid for their work. Both dry and fresh mushrooms are sold locally and the profits are divided at the end of the year among members of the Circle of Light association.
Community Prayer Requests:
- Clean, drinking water is scarce in the community and the purified water that is available is much too expensive for most to afford.
- Pray for the success of the Mushroom Project and that CoL association members will continue to initiate more beneficial community projects.
- Even with more than 1,000 homes participating in the CoL program, there is still a great need to expand membership since the population is about 35,000.
- HIV/AIDS, typhoid and asthma are common in the community; pray for affordable, quality health services to combat these diseases.
