Circle of Light - Energy to lift the world's poor out of darkness

Marakwet
Number of CoL homes: 148
The community of Marakwet is in the Great Rift Valley province of Kenya. Because of the high elevation (over 10,000) feet, there are cool temperatures both day and night. It’s common to see women wearing traditional regalia made of animal skins to keep warm, and huts with thatched roofs are preferred over ones with iron sheeting. About 95 percent of the people are self-employed through farming and livestock. Most raise merino sheep for wool and meat, or dairy cows, which graze in the green plains and forests. Farmers grow tea, potatoes and other vegetables.

A CoL Center was launched in Marakwet in October of 2004. Thanks to early missionaries, Christianity is the primary religion in this area. However, like the sheep in the area, they are in need of a good shepherd. There are very few pastors and in the area and Christians need training and daily discipleship.

Community Prayer Requests:

  • Although many claim Christianity, there is a lack of pastors and godly leadership and discipleship training in the area.
  • Many children don’t go to school because they look after the livestock, and the nearest school is two hours away (local institutions closed because of past tribal conflicts). Pray for the new school that several CoL members are trying to establish near the CoL Center.
  • Roads and buildings (and Marakwet’s physical infrastructure in general) need improvement.
  • Pray for significant increase in CoL participants so that Circle of Light can further impact the region’s growing population.
