Number of CoL homes: 390The residents of Malava are scattered around the countryside except for dense population near the small trading centers. Farms in the area mainly grow corn, beans, bananas and sugar cane.
The youth constitute the largest people group in this community, which is made up of the following tribes/ethinic groups: Kalejin, Jaluo, Luhya and Kikuyu. However, the Luhyas are the largest ethnic group in the area. The Luhya tribe is known for its male circumcision ceremony carried out every other year. A special rite of passage, this marks a period of transition from boyhood to manhood. During the circumcision, done with no anaesthesia, a boy may not scream, make any unnecessary movements or even blink. This proves that he is worthy of respect from the women and community.
Circle of Light (CoL) was launched in the community of Malava in February of 2007, and membership continues to grow.
Christianity is the major religion in Malava and the local church is engages in evangelism and discipleship activities. The CoL Communication Center is often used as a place of worship and for fellowship and Bible studies.
Community prayer requests:
- For an increase in Circle of Light membership/participation.
- There is a high rate of alcohol abuse and theft in Malava. Pray for justice, safety and a decrease in crime.
- For improvement of educational facilities.
- Pray for empowerment, organization and finances to initiate other projects that will address community needs.
