Number of CoL homes: 603Prior to Kenyan independence in 1963, Kiminini was a white-settler area. It is quite populous with 100,000 people, representing several tribes, making it a “diverse” area. Kiminini is located at the foot of Mt. Elgon, where it receives rain from April to October and has warm days and cool nights. There are very few forests. People earn money through small-scale farming and micro-enterprises like bicycle taxis, vegetable stands and craft shops.
A CoL Center was launched in Kiminini in September of 2003. There are too few schools for the number of children, who either attend school in shifts or meet under trees. And, there are a high number of widows and orphans due to HIV/AIDS. Widow inheritance—when the woman becomes the property of her late husband’s brother—is still a prevalent custom because the widows cannot afford to survive on their own. Orphans are shunned by surviving relatives and are left to fend for themselves.
Community Prayer Requests:- That relatives and community members will take in HIV/AIDS orphans.
- For churches that are starting ministries to help widows, in hopes of ending the widow-inheritance custom.
- More schools so that children don’t have to meet under trees or attend in shifts.
- That the new CoL Center board members, who were voted in by CoL members, will be strong, honest, organized leaders in their community.
